The film Dalí Dimension by Spanish filmmaker Juan Ubeda and narrated by Joseph Nuzzolo president of The Salvador Dalí Society, is an intriguing journey into the metaphysical and mind bending effects science had on the works of Salvador Dalí.
Dalí Dimension explores one
of the rarely investigated or discussed facets of Dalí’s personality; his secret obsession for science. It reveals a completely unknown aspect of one of the most important figures of the 20th Century and gives new insight into some of his greatest masterpieces. Dalí’s obsession with science lasted his entire life and can be seen in several aspects of his creative endeavors, even his signature is directly influenced by a scientific image.
Dalí read scientific literature compulsively, from psychoanalysis to quantum mechanics, and mathematics to genetics. Moreover, he strove all his life to meet relevant scientists: Sigmund Freud, James D. Watson (co-discoverer of the structure of DNA, Nobel Prize 1962), Ilya Prigogine (Nobel prize chemistry 1977), Severo Ochoa (Nobel prize physiology 1959).
He befriended researchers in physics, mathematics, biology and other disciplines. Scientists were surprised to discover that beyond the façade of a clownish showman was a brilliant artist with whom they could have meaningful discussions at the crossroads of art and science.
James D. Watson, Ilya Prigogine and other researchers give their personal accounts of their relationship with the painter.
Art historians Dawn Ades (University of Essex, curator of the retrospective on Dalí) and Gavin Parkinson (Oxford University) highlight the scientific influences that can be found in a selection of works by Dalí.
